Three Cunnigar Winners at County Strokeplay Championships May 26th

Pictured above are Paddy Noonan, Cáit Mulcahy and Michael Delaney who won their respective County Championships on Sunday, May 26th.

The Waterford Strokeplay Championships were held at Cunnigar last Sunday, May 26th. It was great to see such great support for these championships again this year. The weather was ideal for pitch and putt, and the course was in fantastic condition and is a credit to the lads who put so much of their time and effort into maintaining our top class course. Many of the players from the visiting clubs remarked on the quality of the greens and fairways and on the fact that our club has very picturesque surroundings, which are more noticeable when the weather is good, as it was on Sunday.

When everyone had completed 36 holes, our club emerged with three new County Champions……Cáit Mulcahy in the Ladies Junior, Paddy Noonan in the Gents Junior and Michael Delaney in The Gents Intermediate. Another feature of these championships was the phenomenal score of 20 under par achieved by Eddie Hennessy (Ashgrove) in the Gents Senior Championship.

All in all, it was a most enjoyable day, and everyone who took part enjoyed the event.

Breda O'Donnell - Munster Matchplay Champion May 19th

Many congratulations to Breda O Donnell, who won the Munster Matchplay Ladies Junior final last Sunday, May 19th, at the ESB Pitch and Putt Club, Cork. Breda had to contend with the challenge of Marie Kerr from Rosscarbery, Co Cork. The first 18 holes saw the lead change hands on a number of occasions, with Marie leading initially as she went 1 up on the 4th, the match was brought back to level on the 7th before Marie went 1up on the 10th, a lead she extended to 2up briefly on the 12th before Breda fought back to level after 18. In the second 18 Breda came to the fore and went 1 up after 19, by the 25th she had gone to 1 down but a stretch of eight threes in a row saw her convert this deficit to a lead of four holes as she ran out a winner by a 4&3 margin. This was a vastly entertaining contest and played in a sporting and friendly manner. This victory follows on from Breda’s splendid win at the Hillview Scratch Cup a week previously, and with the Munster Strokeplay Championships being held at Cunnigar in July, the experience of playing at the top level will stand Breda in good stead for those Championships. A special mention must also be made of the splendid performance of Cáit Mulcahy, who was narrowly beaten in the Semi-Final.

Hollow Tine - Job Done

Thanks to everyone who helped with the work on the course this week!

From start to finish, it only took two and a half days to hollow tine 24 greens and sweep 3 coatings of sand into them afterwards. It was great to see the effort that was put in all week, especially from the new members! Thanks also to the ladies who looked after the catering.

Five Cunnigar teams made the trip to Douglas Pitch and Putt Club in Cork last Sunday, May 12th, to take part in the PJ Bell National Mixed Team Competition. Fortunately, the storm force winds of the previous few days abated, and the competition took place under very pleasant conditions. Thirty six teams, from clubs all around Ireland, took part. The competition was held over two sessions. At the end of the day, the overall honours were taken by a team from Ferbane Pitch and Putt Club, Offaly. However, one of the Cunnigar Teams, comprising of Stella Kinsella, Liam Simms and Gerard O’Brien, won a prize for the best nett score of the first session. Overall, each and every one of our players enjoyed the competition. For some of our players, this was their first time playing in a major national competition, and, no doubt, this experience will stand them in good stead for future competitions.
