Men's Captain's Day

Pictured above are Gerard O’Brien (Overall Winner)
and John Charles (Captain)

Despite the ominous looking cloud formation that hung over the course last Sunday morning, July 28th, the Captain’s Prize competition, hosted by the 2013 Captain John Charles, went ahead as planned and, luckily, the rain stayed away for the duration of play. The turnout was smaller than expected (possibly due to the weather), but nevertheless a very good competition was held. A “Nearest the Pin” shootout was also held, and this proved to be great fun for all the competitors. The caterers once again came up trumps and looked after everyone with their usual culinary wizardry. All in all it was a great success and well done to John Charles and his team for such a wonderful event.

Munster Strokeplay Championships 2013

Lorraine Troy is Munster Strokeplay Junior Champion

Our course provided a superb challenge to the competitors in the Munster Ladies Strokeplay Championships which was held at Cunnigar last Sunday, July 14th, and the Sunny South East certainly lived up to its reputation as almost from the start the sun shone and the players were bathed in its warm glow for the entire day.
Lorraine Troy continued her recent run of success with a fantastic win in Junior Championship. After 18 holes Breda O’Donnell (Cunnigar) led with 60, she was closely followed by Stella Kinsella (Cunnigar) and Lorraine Troy (Cunnigar) both on 61 while Caroline English (Tramore) was next on 63. Lorraine added a superb 53 to her opening 61 to take the title with an excellent score of 114. She was followed in second place by Breda O’Donnell on 117 while Caroline English (Tramore) was next on 122.
Perfectly matched first and second 18 hole scores of 58 gave Sarah Byrne (Fermoy) the Intermediate title in Cunnigar on a total of 116, she won by a single stroke from Mary Quinn (Lakeside) on 117 while first round leader Mary Murray (Rocklodge) finished in third spot with a score of 119.
Breda Lonergan (Tipperary Hills) carded two superb 18 hole scores of 53 to emerge victorious in the Ladies senior section with an excellent score of 106, she was followed in second place by Eleanor Walsh (Fermoy) on 108 while Sharon Bowes (Fermoy) took third place on 112.
The scoring overall was of a very high standard having due regard to the intense heat.
Our club was delighted that this event was a huge success.
The preparatory work that went in to hosting this event was phenomenal and great credit must go to our volunteers who have come up trumps
once again.

The sweltering conditions in Cashel were nearly unbearable, so many congratulations to Aidan on this magnificent result.

Munster Ladies Strokeplay Championships July 14th

The excitement from the recent overwhelming success of the Cunnigar Ladies Open has barely had a chance to subside, when once again the palpable anticipation is attaining crescendo levels as we await the arrival to Dungarvan of the top Ladies players in Munster on Sunday. Our club has the honour of hosting the 2013 Ladies Munster Strokeplay Championships on July 14th. Our club will be well represented in the Intermediate and Junior grades and with some of the Ladies enjoying recent success at the Munster Matchplay, various scratch cups, opens, etc., the likelihood is that one or more of the Championship winners will be from the Cunnigar club. Everything is in place for this weekend’s competitions, and the whole event promises to be another resounding success.

Practice for this event is available all week until Saturday at 1pm, when the course will close for final course preparations.

Next Sunday also, three of our members will be taking part in the Gents Munster Strokeplay Championships at Larkspur Park Pitch and Putt Club, Cashel.

The Cunnigar Club extends the best of luck to all the club members who are competing in Sunday's Championships, both in Dungarvan and in Cashel.

Record entry for Cunnigar Ladies Open

Pictured above are Lorraine Troy (Overall Winner)
and Chris Orzolek (Butchers Block, Dungarvan Shopping Centre)

The “Butchers Block” Cunnigar Ladies Open took place last Sunday June 30th. This annual event is one of the major competitions for Ladies in the country and is always well supported and this year was no exception. A total of 68 competitors, from 15 clubs, arrived at our course last Sunday.  This record number of lady competitors exceeded our wildest dreams, and it was a just reward for the immense amount of preparatory work that had been put into this event. The course was immaculate, as good as it ever could be. The catering for this event has taken weeks of planning and preparation, and, on the day, professional caterers couldn’t have achieved the standard of the fayre that was produced in the clubhouse kitchen by the Cunnigar Ladies. It was incredible!

The scoring during the competition reflected the fine weather and the superb condition of our course.

At the end of the day, it was our own Lorraine Troy who took the well-deserved honours as the overall winner. Lorraine beat off some stiff competition from some of the best players in the country and achieved a magnificent win. All the practice of late has really paid off for Lorraine, and she more than deserves this great victory.

Many of our visitors stayed around after the presentation and enjoyed a great craic with some of our members. Our club is very appreciative of the on-going support of The Butchers Block, Dungarvan Shopping Centre, who generously sponsors this competition annually. This event goes from strength to strength each year and, with the continued support of our generous sponsor, there is every reason for this trend to continue.
