John Charles
scooped another major pitch and putt trophy last week when he won the overall
top prize at the Ashgrove Open in Co. Kilkenny. This has been a tremendous
competition season for John, who has already won major honours this year. He
was a member of the second placed Cunnigar team at the National Scramble in
Tullamore. He was part of the third placed Cunnigar team in the National Mixed Team
(PJ Bell) competition. He also won recently as part of the Cunnigar team that
won the Corkbeg Scramble. John only started playing pitch and putt last year,
and has reaped the rewards for his hard work and effort at the game. We wish
him continued success.

Another success for Cunnigar Scramble Team
Following their 2nd place at the National Scramble Competition earlier
this Summer, the team of Paddy Noonan, Paul Healy and John Charles took part in
the Corkbeg Scramble in Whitegate, Cork last Saturday, July 9th. They
carded a magnificent 13 under par in their opening round which was more than
enough to see off all other competitors and secure first place for this
Cunnigar team. Well done lads!

PJ Bell-3rd Place
| The weather proved very unkind to the teams playing in the P J Bell competition at Cunnigar Pitch and Putt Club on Sunday, June 12th. The players arrived to be greeted by heavy rain and at one stage there was a 30 minute postponement to see if there would be any improvement. Despite the difficult playing conditions there were some good scores returned in the first session with St. Bridget’s A leading the field with 78 points, in second place Cunnigar (B) (John Charles, Jacinta O'Mahony, Paul Healy and Stella Kinsella) on 76 with Lakeside B in third place on 74. Playing conditions eased slightly in the early afternoon but were still extremely testing. Cunnigar B set the pace returning a score of 157, St. Bridget’s A were chasing hard with 120 points for the first three scores but failed to overtake Cunnigar B and ended up on 153. Initial challengers, Lakeside B, faded to a total of 140. Fermoy A scored strongly in the second round to finish on 148. With conditions improving slightly scoring got easier and Cunnigar B went into the lead on 157. As the competition reached its finale the scoring intensified and Cunnigar C (Paddy Noonan, Lorraine Troy, Martin Hayes and Mary O'Neill) returned a score of 158, just one shot ahead of long time leaders Cunnigar B on 157, a score matched by Fermoy B who just edged out Cunnigar B on the back 9. The gross section was won by RGSC A on 128. Well done to everyone who put in such an enormous amount of work over the past few weeks to have the course in such pristine condition. The catering on Sunday was fabulous. Well done to Sheila and her team. All in all, despite the atrocious weather, our hosting of this national competition was another organisational success for the club. Full Details- 1st Cunnigar C - 158. 2nd Fermoy B -157 on back 9. 3rd Cunnigar B - 157 on back 9. Gross RGSC A -128. (Click on pictures to enlarge) |

Cunnigar Team takes 2nd place at National Scramble in Tullamore
Pictured above are Paul Healy, Paddy Noonan and John Charles, accompanied by Mr. Myles McMorrow, President of the Pitch and Putt Union of Ireland
Congratulations to Paul Healy, Paddy Noonan and John Charles (Cunnigar “A”), who were runners-up at the National Scramble Final which was held in Co. Offaly last weekend, May 7th and 8th. Played over 2 courses, Tullamore and Erry (Clara), this was a fantastic achievement by the team, who were playing in a National final for the first time.
Seventy two teams, from all over Ireland , qualified to play in this competition. Cunnigar Pitch and Putt Club was well represented, 3 teams having qualified. After 2 rounds on Saturday, the field was whittled down to the top 36 teams, who qualified to play on Sunday. At this stage, Cunnigar “A” were way back in 22nd place. After 2 rounds on Sunday morning, Cunnigar “A” posted a fabulous score which catapulted them into joint 3rd place. With the competition now narrowed down to the top 18 teams, who had to play in the final round on Sunday afternoon in Tullamore, Cunnigar still had the 3 teams challenging for the top honours. Glorious sunshine coupled with a strong swirling wind greeted the competitors as they faced the final 18 holes. When play ended, Cunnigar “A” had improved their position once again and had achieved 2nd place. When all the scores were finalised, Cunnigar’s 3 teams were in the top ten. This was an astounding achievement for our club and congratulations to our 3 teams who represented our club with distinction.
National Scramble teams:
Cunnigar “A”: Paul Healy, Paddy Noonan, John Charles. (2nd).
Cunnigar “C”: Aiden O’Rourke, Martin Hayes, David Brophy. (7th).
